Rania Khoury shoots fragrance out of Paris, by way of Beirut. A decade inside the niche perfume houses taught her the brief never changes: make the viewer smell the image. Her answer is translation, never illustration. She does not photograph the ingredient, she photographs the note. A pile of lemons is a grocery ad; hard noon sun raking a lime-washed wall until the light itself turns glossy and acidic, that is citrus. She reads a fragrance for its character first, then builds the surface, the light, and the air that carry it: water-slicked basalt, charred oak, smoked glass, sun-bleached plaster.
