The rules Amazon enforces

Amazon holds the primary (main) product image to a strict, machine-checked standard. If a listing’s main image breaks one of these, Amazon can auto-crop it, down-rank the listing, or suppress the image entirely. These are the requirements a compliant main image has to clear.

The pure-white background and the 85% frame fill are the two that trip up the most sellers — a phone snapshot on a “white” sheet is almost never exactly 255,255,255, and products are usually shot too small in the frame.

RequirementWhat Amazon enforces
BackgroundPure white, exactly RGB 255,255,255. Amazon samples the corner pixels, so a near-white like 250,250,250 fails.
Frame fillThe product must occupy at least 85% of the image frame.
ResolutionLongest side at least 1000px to enable zoom; 2000px recommended; 10,000px maximum.
Aspect ratioSquare 1:1 is recommended. Non-square images are auto-cropped.
File sizeUnder 10 MB.
FormatJPEG (preferred), PNG, TIFF, or non-animated GIF.
Color modesRGB.
GraphicsNo text, logos, watermarks, badges, or borders. Text printed on the product’s own packaging is allowed.
ContentsOnly the product being sold — no props, hands, or accessories not included in the purchase.
QualityIn focus, color-accurate, and not stretched or distorted.

Category exceptions apply: some categories allow the product to be shown differently on the main image — apparel on a model or a ghost mannequin, a single shoe photographed at an angle, or jewellery without display props. Check your category’s style guide when in doubt.

Common questions

What background does Amazon require for the main image?

A pure white background at exactly RGB 255,255,255. Amazon inspects the corner pixels, so an off-white such as 250,250,250 is rejected. Only the main image must be pure white; secondary images can use lifestyle backgrounds.

What size should Amazon product images be?

The longest side must be at least 1000px so zoom is enabled — 2000px is recommended for crisp zoom, and 10,000px is the maximum. Below 1000px on the long side, buyers lose the zoom feature.

Does Amazon allow text on the main image?

No. The main image cannot contain added text, logos, watermarks, badges, or borders. The one exception is text that is physically printed on the product or its packaging, which is part of the product itself.

How much of the frame must the product fill?

At least 85%. A product floating small in a large white frame fails the fill requirement and can be suppressed or auto-cropped.

What file formats and file size does Amazon accept?

JPEG (preferred), PNG, TIFF, or non-animated GIF, in sRGB color mode, under 10 MB. JPEG is the safest choice for photographs.

Why was my Amazon image suppressed?

The most common causes are a non-pure-white background, the product filling less than 85% of the frame, a long side under 1000px, or added text, logos, borders, or props on the main image. Fixing whichever rule failed restores the listing image.

ioli generates product images on a mathematically pure-white 2000px canvas — compliant by default.
